Talk about instant gratification! In an e-mail dated Jan. 23, Cheryl Vlach tapped out, “I wanted to let you know that we have already had success with my request to find the original chipper champs cookie recipe!
“At noon today, only a few hours after my SOS hit the paper, I received a call from a very kind reader in Everett (I’m afraid I don’t recall her name) who shared her recipe and her story with me.
“It seems this recipe was also a favorite for her family and she, too, misplaced it years ago. She tried to contact the company, but with no success. She eventually had the recipe resurface at her home, and was glad to pass it on to me over the phone.”
Winding up, Cheryl adds, “It pays to have a helpful community and an unusual last name! Thank you for your part in this success story. I am guessing you may have others share the recipe with you, too, but I did want to tell you of my helpful phone call. I’m sincerely grateful and ready to make those cookies.”
We thank Cheryl for her thanks, and confirm her guess about faithful Forum cooks, four of whom also immediately responded to her request, sending identical recipes, proving that in this particular case, there’s obviously no acceptable also-ran or even a good substitute for the “real” thing.
Peggy Abbott of Everett writes, “Tell Cheryl Vlach that this chocolate chipper champs recipe was one of my sons’ favorite recipes, too. I’ve attached a scan of the original recipe. If you can’t read it (the Forum could), I can type it up and send it to you.
“I’m sure you’ll hear from lots of folks that make these easy cookies. I used to make them at the holidays with red and green M&Ms. Enjoy!”
Lake Stevens cookiebaker Donna Hermann tells us, “I believe I may have the cookie recipe that Cheryl is looking for. I cut this recipe from the back of an M&Ms bag years ago. These cookies taste as good, if not better, than the bakery-made M&Ms cookies.”
Betty Dickson of Everett says, “I read your article in the paper about the lady who wanted to find a recipe for chipper champs and, right away, I remembered having such a recipe with M&Ms candies in it. Hope this is the one she is looking for.”
And last but not least, we hear from Jeri Plumb of Everett, “I found this recipe for chocolate chipper champs online. Since it says it’s from 1997, I’m hoping this is the recipe your reader is looking for.”
Now, here’s THE one and only right recipe for:
Chocolate chipper champs
3/4cup butter or margarine, softened
11/3cups light brown sugar
2eggs
1teaspoon vanilla
21/4cups flour
1teaspoon baking soda
1/2teaspoon salt
1cup M&Ms plain chocolate candies
1/2cup chopped nuts
M&Ms for cookie tops (optional)
In a mixing bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy; blend in eggs and vanilla. Combine flour, baking soda and salt, mixing well; gradually add to creamed mixture, mixing well. Stir in candies and nuts.
Drop dough by heaping tablespoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet about 3 inches apart. Press 3 to 4 additional candies into each cookie, if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on cookie sheet about 3 minutes; remove cookies to wire rack to cool thoroughly.
Makes about 2 dozen 31/2-inch cookies. For 4 dozen cookies, double ingredients and proceed as recipe directs.
Note: For 31/2 dozen 21/2-inch cookies, drop dough by rounded teaspoonfuls onto lightly greased cookie sheet, press 3 or 4 additional candies into each cookie, if desired, and bake at 375 degrees until light brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Cool slightly on cookie sheet, then remove to wire rack to cool thoroughly.
