“Peter Pan”: Fly away to where dreams are born.
That’s the catch phrase for Seattle Children’s Theatre new musical production of “Peter Pan.”
SCT’s marketing manager Jim Jewell said this production of “Peter Pan” promises to be a “spectacular event, with by far the largest cast of the season, aerial effects by Flying by Foy, and the always-engaging direction of Seattle Children’s Theatre artistic director Linda Hartzell.”
Also, SCT is boasting four characters aloft at once with Flying by Foy, a tick-tocking, captain-eating crocodile and a Bollywood-style dance number.
“The music in this show is so wonderful and fun, that boys and girls alike will delight in the imaginative adventure,” Hartzell said.
The musical, adapted by Jerome Robbins from the original play by James M. Barrie, with music by Mark Charlap and lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, holds true to the classic tale of Peter, Wendy and all the Darling children flying off to Neverland for fun and grand adventure with the Peter’s Lost Boys.
The fun ends, though, when Wendy and Princess Tiger Lily are captured by a band of pirates. It takes Peter’s wily skills and Tinkerbell’s resolve to free them and turn the pirates against their Capt. Hook.
The show takes the audience into the future when Peter Pan continues to visit Wendy in London, until one day he finds that she has grown up and has a child of her own.
“Peter Pan” opens with a public preview at 7 p.m. Thursday at Seattle Children’s Theatre, 201 Thomas St., Seattle. Shows are 7 p.m. weekdays, 5:30 p.m. weekends with 2 p.m. matinees through Jan. 10. Tickets range from $18 to $42. Call 206-441-3322 or go to www.sct.org. “Peter Pan” is recommended for ages 6 and older.
“The Sound of Music”: It’s at that exact moment when you see the matching blue sailor outfits on all the Von Trapp children that your mind is flooded with all those familiar sounds of music.
The uplifting true story of the Von Trapp family will be brought again to audiences when the Lyric Light Opera performs Rodger &Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music.”
The musical is the final collaboration of this legendary duo and marked a huge finale success since its stage debut in 1957. Since that time the story and songs have been embedded on our collective consciousness.
The score for “The Sound of Music” brims over with memorable music and lyrics including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Edelweiss” and, of course, “The Sound of Music.” The songs combined with the story’s message of triumph over adversity remains a classic family favorite.
“The Sound of Music” plays at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Nov. 13 and 14 and 2 p.m. Sunday and Nov. 15 at McIntyre Hall, 2501 E. College Way, Mount Vernon. Tickets begin at $15. Call 360-416-7277, 866-624-6897 or go to www.mcintyrehall.org.
