When you’re out of ideas for dinner (or lunch, or breakfast), or at a loss for what to do with your mountain of zucchini, the Web can be both a blessing and a curse. Sure, you can always Google “zucchini recipes,” and you’ll get more than you ever dreamed possible, but then you’re drowning not only in zucchini, but in recipes that may or may not be any good. So here are a few places I’ve found consistently delicious ideas:
101 Cookbooks: Feast your eyes as well as your belly. Heidi Swanson’s site includes lovely stories, beautiful photos and vegetarian recipes. It’s also handily sorted into categories; you may find the quick recipes section especially useful. Since apples are coming into season, let me recommend the curried apple couscous (side note: I usually leave out the mint and pine nuts, and I sprinkle some goat cheese over the apples and couscous). If you’re not tired of gorging yourself on berries yet, the old-fashioned blueberry cake looks delightful, too.
Real Simple: The magazine has a hefty assortment of recipes on its Web site. You can sort them according to main ingredient, occasion, dietary restriction and other criteria, and see which ones are most popular. Now that squash is showing up all over the place, it won’t be long before I make the linguine with butternut squash, bacon and goat cheese, which is one of my fall favorites, and, surprisingly for a pasta dish, makes amazing leftovers.
Orangette: Seattle blogger Molly Wizenberg has recently written a book and, with her husband, just opened a restaurant, Delancey. I’m partial to her immensely simple chickpea salad with lemon and Parmesan. Her blog includes a variety of delicious stories, but if you’d rather skip straight to the food, you can also browse her list of recipes.
