Toyota’s 4Runner was a frontrunner when it comes to the go-anywhere adventure vehicle that
has now become an icon in what has become American off-road culture.
The 2025 version capitalizes on its more than 40-year history with an extremely capable,
advanced, and refined SUV with a long list of amenities and passenger-centric experience.
My tester, the 4Runner Hybrid 4WD TRD Pro was all of that – and more. Toyota now offers nine
grades that include the first-ever Trailhunter and Platinum grades. The others include SR5, TRD
Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off–Road, TRD Off–Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Powered by an I-FORCE MAX four-cylinder turbocharged hybrid powertrain coupled with an
eight-speed automatic transmission, 4Runner delivers 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. It
brings all the power and capability midsize SUV fans love, and has up to an EPA-estimated 21
miles per gallon rating in combined city and highway driving.
Maximum towing capacity is rated at 6,000 pounds, and 4Runner has a range of approximately
325 miles between fill-ups.
What helps set 4Runner apart from the myriad of off-road pretenders is its flexibility. It offers 2-
and 4-WD high modes, 4WD low, and Multi-Terrain Select which provides Mud & Sand, Loose
Rock, Rock, and Mogul modes. In addition, crawl control and a locking rear differential provide
even more function. When on paved roads, choices of Normal, Spot, Eco, and Tow/Haul adjust
the vehicle’s throttle, transmission and traction to optimize performance and efficiency.
The TRD Pro exclusive grade packs additional standard features like TRD-Tuned FOX QS3
adjustable shocks with rear remote reservoirs, a TRD performance air intake and 33-inch Toyo
tires with 18-inch black alloy wheels.
The interior is available in black or cockpit red with technical-camo-pattern inserts, heated and
ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats with power adjustability. TRD Pro also uses a TRD
performance air intake and exhaust to allow the i-FORCE MAX engine to breathe even more
efficiently and features unique exterior features such as a 20-inch LED light bar integrated into a
heritage-inspired “TOYOTA” grille, and RIGID Industries LED fog lamps.
When it comes to creature comforts, 4Runner does not disappoint. The interior benefits from a
14-inch screen that displays Toyota Audio Multimedia with Apple Car Play, Android Auto, and
navigation. Other goodies include a JBL audio system with 14 speakers including a subwoofer,
amp and portable speaker, power tilt/slide moonroof, heated and ventilated front seats.
Optional trim included a tailgate LED light, compressor, roof rack, cargo lights, skid plate, tow
hooks, a towing trailer ball mount that add about another $5,000 to the bottom line.
Proactive Driving Assist is now a part of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. PDA uses the vehicle’s
camera and radar, when system operating conditions are met, to provide gentle braking and/or
steering to support driving tasks such as distance control between your vehicle and a preceding
vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist. PDA can also provide gentle braking into curves.
Other safety features include a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure
Alert with Steering Assist, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing
Assist, Road Sign Assist, and Automatic High Beams.
