The Tudor Choir announces its program for the 2013 and 2014 season: a five-concert series focusing on the heritage of English choral music.
The subscription series features a survey of English sacred music, a concert of Advent carols and motets, the annual Christmas concert, a performance of early English devotional music and a sequence of psalms and songs.
The choir will be joined by an instrumental ensemble, the Tudor Players, for two performances.
Concert No. 1: 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26: “Faire is the Heaven: Music of the English Church,” from the 16th century to the present, including pieces by Byrd, Gibbons, Stanford and Vaughan Williams.
Concert No. 2: 8 p.m. Dec. 6: “My Dancing Day: Advent Carols and Motets,” a sequence of carols and motets for the season of Advent and Tomas Luis de Victoria’s “Missa Alma redemptoris mater” for double choir.
Concert No. 3: 7:30 p.m. Dec. 28: “English Christmas: Traditional Carols for Christmas and the New Year.” Along with traditional carols, the group will present three holiday classics: “Christmas Day” by Gustav Holst, “In Terra Pax” by Gerald Finzi and “Fantasia on Christmas Carols” by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The 30-foot Christmas tree at Blessed Sacrament will be lighted before the concert.
Concert No. 4: 7:30 p.m. March 8: “Devotio: Private and Ritual Devotion in Early Tudor England.” These are liturgical devotions, often performed to candlelight.
Concert No. 5: 7:30 p.m. May 10: “I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes: Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs,” many from English composer, John Rutter.
All concerts will be presented at Blessed Sacrament Church, 5041 Ninth Ave. NE, Seattle.
