Upcoming outdoor events in Snohomish County and nearby

North Cascades: The North Cascades Institute offers a free open house and barbecue from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 17 at its Environmental Learning Center on the shores of Diablo Lake to celebrate NCI’s 30th anniversary. The event includes a picnic, naturalist-led activities, hikes, boat tours, live music and more. Details at ncascades.org/signup/programs/anniversary-picnic. Also, check out the class list for the institute. They offer a variety of classes all summer.

Stevens Pass: The disc golf course and bike park at Stevens Pass are open for summer operations. The chair lift is running, so you can ride to the top and play, ride or walk down. The lift runs today (July 3) and tomorrow (July 4). After that, it will be open Thursdays through Sundays through Labor Day. Hours and details at www.stevenspass.com/site/summer.

Survive: Learn the keys to effective shelter-building, water purification, fire-making, wild edibles foraging and other skills that can keep you alive in an emergency and enhance your outdoor experiences at 2 p.m. Saturday (July 9) at Snohomish Public Library, 311 Maple Ave. For all ages. Presented by Alderleaf Wilderness College.

Fairies: Take the ferry to Whidbey Island and make your own fairy house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday (July 9) at Meerkerk Garden, 2 miles south of Greenbank. Natural materials are provided but feel free to bring your own additions. $10, 12 and under free; www.meerkerkgardens.org.

Trail work: The North 350 Blades, which does trail work on the Pacific Crest Trail, has two big trail work events coming up. The first, an extended trip from June 9 to June 16, is near Glacier Peak. The second, July 22-24, is near Stevens Pass. Get information and sign up at www.pcta.org/volunteer.

Hiking 101: Learn the basics to start hiking safely in the Pacific Northwest at 7 p.m. July 12 at The Mountaineers Program Center, 7700 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle; http://bit.ly/297XfeS.

Climbing: If you’ve been climbing indoors and would like to make the transition to outdoors, get info on how to do so safely and responsibly at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and July 20 at the Seattle Bouldering Project, 900 Poplar Place S, Seattle; seattleboulderingproject.com.
