Holiday ornament making: Schack Art Center is offering holiday ornament making classes for all ages where participants can make a holiday ornament in 20 minutes or less and have plenty of cheer doing it. You’ll get to work with one of Schack’s skilled glassblowers to design and blow a glass holiday ornament. This family friendly class features holiday music and hot glass. To ensure a spot, sign up online ahead of time at www.schack.org. Ornament making runs through Dec. 21. Cost is $30.

“Holiday Art Show”: Through Dec. 29 at the Main Gallery of Schack Art Center, 2919 Hoyt Ave., Everett; 425-259-5050; www.schack.org; this annual Holiday Art Show will feature artists from the Skagit Valley and include a variety of glass, pottery, ornaments, jewelry and more artwork.

At 5 p.m. Dec. 10, the eve of the longest night of the year, Camano Island artist Jack Gunter will unveil a group of paintings that capture the moment after sunset when all the color vanishes. This 10 works of art is Gunter’s “Nocturne Series” and he said “When I play in this monochromatic world I feel like an explorer.” The exhibition is open to the public noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and weekends by appointment through the New Year.

The Pacific Northwest Needle Arts Guild will display more than 40 works of needlecraft during their 2011 Fiber Show through Dec. 31, featuring techniques such as embroidery, quilting, felting, crocheting, knitting, basketry and cross-stitching. Also, a model train exhibit with layout is on permanent display downstairs.

Jennifer White, of Snohomish, presents selections of oil paintings titled “Growth.” Her large-scale paintings don’t take away from her delicate presentation of vibrant colors mixed with emotion in 29 pieces of figurative works, still lifes, city scapes and interiors. Skagit County

“Paint Me a River Too!”: Features the work of more than 100 local artists and reflects their personal view of Skagit history in all types of media at the Skagit County Historical Museum, 501 S Fourth St., La Conner; 360-466-3365 or www.skagitcounty.net/museum. Through Dec. 31.

Museum of Northwest Art: 121 S. First St., La Conner; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday; 360-466-4446; www.museumofnwart.org; “The First 30 Years: MoNA Collects,” is a celebration of the museum’s first 30 years with an exhibition that fills every gallery on both floors. This comprehensive exhibit honors more than 200 donors to the permanent collection. Through Jan. 1.

Seattle

Do Ho Suh’s thoughtful commentary illuminates these precious works and makes them relevant for today’s contemporary audience.
