Weekend fun: Wine, beer, planes, outlaws and more

Arts &spirits: Celebrate the harvest during the Autumn on Whidbey Wine, Spirits and Art Tour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Five tasting rooms will participate in the tour. Sample the wine and spirits while you enjoy art made by local artists and watch artists in action. Get more info here.

Stout: Celebrate International Stout Day at Everett’s Middleton Brewing on Saturday, Nov. 8 at noon. Middleton will have eight unique stouts on tap. A pint is $5, schooner is $3 and a sample is $1.50. Get more info and see what’s on tap here.

Flying History: Mike Lavelle will talk about one of the most compelling aviation passenger experiences ever, the flying boats, at the Historic Flight Foundation at noon on Saturday. Tickets $10-$15. Get more info here.

Heroes and Outlaws: The Hometown Hootenanny offers up its mix of country, folk and bluegrass at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Wagner Performing Arts Center, 639 W. Main St., Monroe. The Hometown Band plans to play “The Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised” and “Unsung Heroes.” Guest artists include fan favorite Jesse Taylor, the singing cowboy from Arlington, and the northwest folk duo The Winterlings. On the stage: A number of plays and musicals are playing in Snohomish County right now, including “The Wizard of Oz” and “In the Heights.” Check out our list here.

For families: Joe and Paula McHugh perform “Shakin’ Down the Acorns,” a show with captivating stories and toe-tapping fiddle and banjo tunes, at 11 a.m. Saturday at Marysville Library, 6120 Grove St. They perform again at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Snohomish Library, 311 Maple Ave. Free.

Flannel boards: Learn how to make favorite stories come to life with fun flannel shapes at a Flannel Story Workshop, 10:30 a.m. Nov. 7 at the Monroe Library, 1070 Village Way. Materials and preschool activities provided. For children and families.

Curly Tops Cypress (Chamaecyparis pisfiera), a modern version of the old Boulevard Cypress, is one I chose years ago and still enjoy. Great blue color and interesting twisted needles add texture to boot. This is a smaller grower, maturing to perhaps 10-feet tall and 8-feet wide, but it will take some shearing if needed.
