Where to cut your own Christmas tree

Heading to Happy Valley Tree Farm was a ritual for generations of families for almost four decades.

It offered 25 acres of happiness for those who came to visit the Silvana farm owned by retired pathologist Clayton Haberman and his wife, Barbara.

Decked out in his big coat and hard hat with holly, he sharpened the saws that she handed to customers to make fresh-cut memories.

There were big pots of hot apple cider and a crackling fire to thaw cold fingers and toes.

Trees were $20, and designed by nature — deer damage and all. “People who want a big, bushy, solid tree, they waste their time coming up here,” Clayton Haberman, then 93, said in a Herald story last year.
