“Drink fast, before the flavor changes.”
Bryce Lathrop, owner-operator of White Moustache Urban Adventure Co., made that one, simple suggestion while my wife and I were admiring the demitasses our macchiatos had come in during our tour stop at a Queen Anne bakery. We aren’t macchiato drinkers. We didn’t know the taste turns bitter if the espresso has time to sink in.
The fact is, attention to the smallest detail trademarks the customer service offered by White Moustache, a Seattle-focused food tour company.
We could have chosen a theme: “The Pork Parade” (each stop features a bite of pig) or “Sunny Side Up Seattle” (a progressive breakfast) or “World of 99” (a wild expedition from Everett to White Center) or “Street Food” (Moustache tracks the best available from Seattle’s mobile food trucks, carts and trailers) – or any one of a number of others. We could have eaten vegetarian or sampled breweries, or made up a theme of our own.
You name it, if it has to do with good food, Moustache knows it.
The service we opted for was home pickup and delivery and four stops at Moustache’s discretion to give us some idea of what they were about.
What an eye opener, what a palate pleaser: salmon pate and the best cioppino we’d ever had at The Fresh Fish Co. in Ballard; a humongous meatloaf sandwich and soft drinks at the Take 5 Urban Market down the street; then, scrumptious almond croissants and the macchiato at Le Reve Bakery and Cafe; and an elegant gnocchi with foraged mushrooms and truffle oil topped off with a smooth, red wine from Northern Italy at the Cantinetta in Wallingford.
Stop to stop and in between, our wheel man Lathrop knew where he was going, was easy to talk with, informative about places and food, on good terms everywhere we went and funny without being overbearing.
“No one should eat alone,” Lathrop said of the premise on which he is building his growing business. Also, his advertising makes it clear: There are no kickbacks from the places he takes people.
Meat and potatoes consideration: The price is $200 for two people for a two-hour eating excursion, $100 for each additional eater or hour. Kids younger than 10 are free when accompanied by a paying adult; and food, beverages and transportation costs are included in the price. Special arrangements can be made for large groups.
