Kindergartners learn about trees

Kindergartners is Donna Connell’s class at St. Mary Magdalen School recently created a “forest of trees” with brown paper lunch bags and colored construction paper to learn science and art concepts while studying the season of fall.

First, the students explored the school grounds, observing, comparing and contrasting evergreen and deciduous trees. They specifically looked at different kinds of tree trunks, branches and leaves. When they returned to the classroom each student constructed a tree “from the ground up,” using the lunch bags and construction paper.

As students cut and twisted the bags, unique tree shapes emerged. Then students added torn paper leaves of red, yellow, and orange to create autumn leaves. Soon an entire forest of trees stood in the kindergarten class.
