Best friend, father + son: Everett company redefines ‘family business’

Shaun Preder started demo and junk removal company to teach son business ethics, community spirit

When some people talk about a family business, they mean that the business is run by members of the same family. For Everett’s Shaun Preder, ‘family business’ has a different definition: helping members of his family learn to run a successful, honorable company.

Preder has run a number of small businesses in Snohomish County for over 30 years, and about a decade ago he took his oldest son under his wing.

“He’s really successful now. He made his own path, and now there are some months that he makes more than me,” Preder says with pride.

Now Preder’s youngest is a high school sophomore, and eager to learn from his dad. Preder’s best friend also expressed an interest in running a company together, so the three started the demolition and junk removal business Ready Set Remove this past spring.

“My youngest is learning a lot! We put him out in the field as much as possible this summer. Now that he’s back in school he’s helping out with social media management when he can, and watching over my shoulder as we do the books and file quarterly taxes.”

Ready Set Remove provides their clients with a pleasant experience, and finds ways to give back to their community too.

The importance of giving back

Running a business isn’t just about accounting and physical labor though, and Preder is determined to teach his son about community involvement as well.

“It’s important to teach him the right way to do things. We’re working to grow the business so we can get to a point where we’re more involved in the community. Giving back is really important,” he says.

Junk removal can be fairly simple, but doing it well requires more sensitivity than you might expect. If clients are downsizing, cleaning up after a fire, or helping a hoarder declutter, working with a compassionate company can make all the difference. As a field producer for the A&E show Hoarders, it’s something Jay Hix Jones understands well.

“Working with a junk removal company that understands the sensitivity needs of hoarders helps make each episode a success. Ready Set Remove does a great job of having compassion for their clients, and is well on their way to being the caliber of company we look to partner with!” Jones says.

Ready Set Remove offers “they point, we pick-up” service to residential and commercial clients across Snohomish and King Counties. For some clients that means stacking a pile of boxes in the garage, and for others it means pointing to items around the property.

And when the demolition and junk removal is all done, Ready Set Remove is proud to do their part to sort items for recycling and safe disposal.

“We’ll make two trips if it means keeping things out of the landfill. It’s another one of the lessons I’m trying to teach my son — you don’t just do what’s easiest, you do what’s right.”

Ready Set Remove offers junk removal and demolition services across North King and Snohomish Counties including Everett, Bothell, Lynnwood, Arlington, Marysville, Granite Falls, Monroe, Redmond, Kirkland, Mill Creek, Lake Stevens, Snohomish and more.
