EVERETT — The Snohomish County Council on Wednesday asked county staff to draw up a proposal to impose a $1-per-night fee on hotel rooms as part of a tourism promotion area.
The instructions from councilmen followed a 10:30 a.m. public hearing during which one person spoke in favor. Members of the lodging and tourism industry have previously spoken in support of the idea. A majority of the larger hotels in nine Snohomish County cities have signed onto the idea as well. The county will have to negotiate agreements to include each city in the tourism-promotion area.
For the idea to become reality, the County Council will first have to vote at a later meeting. If the proposal succeeds, it is expected to generate $1 million per year starting in 2011.
