MOUNT VERNON — A 100-year-old church building in downtown Mount Vernon was destroyed by a fire that broke out as about 60 people were attending an evening Bible study. No one was injured.
The Mount Vernon Fire Department estimated the loss from Tuesday’s three-alarm blaze shortly after 9 p.m. at $750,000.
Everyone at the Roca Fuerte Church got out safely after the lights went out and smoke started to fill the building.
Flames spread quickly through the three-story wood-frame building and the roof collapsed, the fire department said. Two nearby homes were damaged by smoke and water, displacing two families.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
