EVERETT — Fifteen people lost their housing in an early morning fire Sunday.
The blaze caused more than $400,000 in damage to a single-story home with a basement in the 300 block of East Magnolia Avenue in Everett.
The fire started in a bedroom and spead to other parts of the house. Everyone got out safely and there were no injuries to people living there or firefighters.
It underscored the importance of taking extra precautions with space heaters as it gets colder and winter approaches.
A fire inspector determined the cause of the fire was a space heater too close to flammable items in the room.
Firefighters recommend keeping space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn and to maintain that same distance for pets and children near heaters or open fires. They also recommend using heaters with thermostats and overheat protections.
The people living at the home are being helped by the American Red Cross. They were described in a press release as a mix of older children and adults.
