Family traditions made at Earth Day cleanup: Volunteers turned out April 26 in near-perfect weather to clear brush and help sweep up the tennis courts at Evergreen Playfield Complex in honor of Earth Day.
“Some of our volunteers have been participating in this cleanup for over 10 years, creating a family tradition,” said Virginia Olsen, Community Relations director.
Brad Hudson and his son, David, are among those longtime volunteers who returned to help out this year.
The Mountlake Terrace City Council served lunch to all the volunteers at Ballinger Clubhouse to thank them for their work.

Volunteers help restore forest in Forest Park: More than 300 Comcast employees dug, cut and hauled for a forest restoration project April 26 at Everett’s Forest Park. The work was part of Comcast Cares Day. Boeing employees also volunteered at the park with Forterra.
Forest Park is the largest park in the city of Everett and is one of the oldest. Its forested area was planted by Works Progress Administration crews in the 1930s. Eighty years later, a 5-acre section of the forest has been in major decline.
Comcast volunteers helped clear invasive species such as blackberry, ivy, holly and laurel. Volunteers also assisted in renovating landscape beds and preparing for Viva Color, an annual community volunteer flower-planting event on May 31.

Eagle Scouts help at hatchery, park: At the National Boy Scout Eagle Court of Honor held May 4 at Edmonds United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1040 presented the VFW Eagle Scout award to two Scouts, Bobby Murphy and Brett Schafer, both of Boy Scouts of America Troop 312.
Bobby’s Eagle project was building a deck at the local fish hatchery in Woodway. The deck was constructed around a pond that is used for the annual children’s fishing derby.
Brett’s Eagle project was to refurbish a hiking trail at Maplewood Park in Edmonds.
