Applause for Sept. 16, 2016

Quilters give vets a warm welcome

Chelsey Weber, an employee of Quilting Mayhem in Snohomish, organized a team of employees and customers to make quilts for wounded soldiers and veterans.

Recently, Weber and other volunteers created quilts for each of the 20 veterans who live at Sebastian House, a new 20-unit complex in Lynnwood for homeless veterans owned and operated by Catholic Community Services of Western Washington. Weber herself quilted at least half of them.

The quilts were delivered Sept. 6.

Genealogical society celebrates 30 years

The Sno-Isle Genealogical Society celebrates its 30th anniversary this month.

The Lynnwood-based nonprofit helps people trace their family roots, houses a research library, offers classes and focus groups, and serves as a repository for genealogical data concerning Snohomish and Island counties.

A special cake was served at the group’s Sept. 7 meeting. The celebration continues with “Tea, Tasties, and Terrific Talk” open house events, 1-3 p.m. Sept. 20, 22 and 24 at the research library in Heritage Park, 19827 Poplar Way, Lynnwood.

A coloring and activity book marking the anniversary also is available for a $5 donation. Local artist and SIGS member Brenda Sanchez drew the Heritage Park attractions in the book. The city of Lynnwood helped support printing costs.

The SIGS research library is open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. General meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month, September to June, in Mountlake Terrace. To learn more, go to rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wasigs or call 425-775-6267.
