ARLINGTON — The long-range plan for Smokey Point and other parts of west Arlington include pedestrian-oriented commercial and retail centers surrounded by new streets.
The idea is to bring something like Mill Creek Town Center to a spot across from the Arlington Municipal Airport.
Ideas such as these are on the agenda when city planners host a workshop meeting about the future of the west side of the city beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Stillaguamish Senior Center, 18308 Smokey Point Blvd.
The meeting is designed to give city staff a chance to talk about proposed land-use codes for the area, as well as discuss the Arlington’s transfer of development rights program, which seeks to preserve Stillaguamish Valley farm land bordering the city.
Arlington neighborhoods located on the west side include Smokey Point, West Bluff and Island Crossing.
People who attend the workshop meeting should have a chance to review and comment on the policies and concepts, and check out graphics and maps that have been developed since a similar meeting in May.
The agenda also includes the introduction of a land-use map that defines neighborhood gateway corners, trail connections and street-type designations, population density and development standards and offers what probably will become the community “heart” of the area.
Objectives of the plan include managing growth to repair sprawl development and promote a livable character for the area, city officials said.
