TACOMA — An Army planning document discusses the possibility of cutting active-duty soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord that would leave the base with 16,000 soldiers fewer than its peak strength in 2011.
The News Tribune reported that if all the cuts take place over the next three years it would erase a decade of growth and leave Lewis-McChord with fewer soldiers than it had before the Army built up Stryker brigades for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Army says the planning document gives it options for a post-war drawdown and final decisions have not yet been made.
Lewis-McChord currently has about 41,000 military service members, including Reserves. About 27,700 are active-duty soldiers. The base also has more than 15,000 civilian employees.
