Everett: Apply for community art grant

The Everett Cultural Arts Commission is accepting applications for cultural arts grants to pay for art programs and other projects.

The city hopes to foster art for the enjoyment of the entire community. All the projects must take place within Everett city limits and be open to the general public.

Anyone may apply for the money, including arts organizations, artists, schools and other organizations.

The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Friday.

Comcast Arena bond refinancing approved

The public facilities board that owns Comcast Arena has approved a plan to refinance variable-rate bonds.

Earlier this year the arena enjoyed interest rates as low as 0.65 percent. The financial crisis has sent those rates upward — they’re now at 2.75 percent.

The arena issued $27.4 million in revenue bonds now affected by an overseas financial crisis.

Belgian-French bank Dexia backs some of the municipal bonds held by the Everett Public Facilities District.

That bank also has billions of dollars of exposure to Greece’s debt.

Everett Council, Port candidate forum

A candidate forum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Evergreen Middle School Cafeteria, 7621 Beverly Lane.

Candidates for the Everett Port Commission, Everett School Board and Everett City Council plan to attend.

The event is open to the public.

Free HIV tests offered at health district

The Snohomish Health District will offer free HIV testing this week to Latinos and others who are at risk for HIV infection.

The tests will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today; 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday; 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday; 9 a.m. to noon Thursday; and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

The tests are available at 3020 Rucker Ave, Suite 106, Everett.

Woodway: Point Wells cleanup talk

A civil engineer with experience in environmental cleanup is scheduled to give a presentation tonight on the costs of removing contamination from the century-old Puget Sound industrial site at Point Wells.

Hank Landau’s talk is part of Woodway Town Council’s regular 7 p.m. meeting. The address is 23920 113th Place W.

Woodway had no direct role in the cleanup. The talk will give context to a proposed redevelopment of high-end condos and shops that international developer Blue Square Real Estate is seeking on the 61-acre site in unincorporated Snohomish County.

Mountlake Terrace: Vacation house checks

Mountlake Terrace police are reminding people to sign up for house checks before they go on vacation this fall or holiday season.

The city’s Crime Watch program will send volunteers to check on people’s homes while they’re away. Volunteers call patrol officers if anything is amiss.

The program also is accepting applications for volunteers. In addition to house checks, volunteers can help out police at city events.
