A leader at last: As the student-body vice president, helps organize dances and field days, gives morning announcements and holds fundraisers. “Through elementary school I really wanted to get involved in the student councils and always got denied. So (the desire) built up.”
Motivation: “When I came here in the sixth grade it was kind of a gloomy, ‘I’m-not-sure-I-want-to-be-here’ feeling. In seventh grade, it was, ‘Yeah, this is nice. But I think I can make it a better place.’ “
Next project: Student leaders hope to play recorded music during lunch periods. They’re waiting to get the lyrics of their chosen songs approved.
Solid student: Already taking high school-level geometry. Learning online instead of at Everett High School so he doesn’t miss jazz band.
Musician: Plays trombone in the concert and jazz bands. Recently joined the Marimba Club at school, a xylophone ensemble that plays mostly African music. “We have really cool, like, ponchos. They’re called muumuus. I’m like, ‘What the heck’s a muumuu?’ “
School has new look: The club will next play in February for the school’s open house and dedication of its $17 million remodel. “It was really cool to see everything change.”
Volunteer’s heart: Has pitched in at Christmas House for three years. Has an adult chaperone since he’s too young to volunteer on his own. Recalls the look on kids’ faces from the backseat of their car. “Their big ol’ eyes staring at the wrapped presents – it was a really cool feeling.” Looks forward to turning 16 when he can volunteer at a pet shelter, too.
Brotherly love: Has a 9-year-old sister. “I see all my friends that have two siblings and they have a crazy life. I think I’m happy with one.”
Hobby: Plays Warhammer, a fantasy role-playing game where the most time is spent painting the small figurines. “I’m a nerd. What can I say?”
Future plans: Wants to be a wildlife veterinarian like his hero, Steve Irwin, the late “Crocodile Hunter.” “I love being around animals.” Adds, “I also want to travel around the world, when I retire I suppose. But that’s a long way off.”
