STEVENS PASS — The Washington Transportation Department now says U.S. 2 at Stevens Pass is closed indefinitely because of a snowslide and continuing avalanche danger.
The department can’t say how long it will take to reopen the highway that was closed at 5 a.m. Thursday at the pass.
Spokesman Jeff Adamson told KOMO Radio the slide covered all lanes about 15 feet deep and knocked aside jersey barriers.
Adamson says crews will likely have to use explosives for avalanche control work before U.S. 2 reopens.
In the meantime, he recommends drivers traveling between Eastern Washington and Western Washington use Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass.
