If only it were satire ….
A columnist on Whidbey Island is taking Mukilteo police to task for feeding a possibly starving girl snacks that were … less than healthy.
Remember the story? The police were investigating allegations of child abuse after a store owner called CPS to report a girl who came in looking emaciated and bruised.
Police got the girl out of the home, fed her and took her to the hospital. The case remains under investigation.
Apparently, they missed an important step in saving a child – a stop at Whole Foods. The columnist even floats the idea that police feeding the girl Pop-Tarts, pretzels and popcorn was “further abuse.”
You can read the column here: “Pop Tarts and pretzels? What in the world were they thinking?”
Mukilteo Police Chief Rex Caldwell wrote back with a professional and intelligent letter. He acknowledged the importance of healthy lifestyles, but explained that officers were trying to help the girl’s “immediate needs.”

You now have permission to shake your head very slowly.
