STANWOOD — A man’s partially submerged body was recovered Thursday from a drainage ditch in the 26600 block of Marine Drive, just south of Stanwood.
Detectives from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office don’t know who he is or how he died, sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.
They are waiting autopsy results from the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office. A physical examination of the body is scheduled for Friday morning.
There are no missing person reports in the north county area where the body was found, Hover said.
She did not have an approximate age for the man Thursday.
The body was discovered Wednesday evening by a person working in a nearby corn field.
Detectives secured the scene Wednesday night but weren’t able to do a full-scale investigation until Thursday because of darkness and the difficult location of the body in a ravine, Hover said.
They arrived at the scene around 7:30 a.m. Thursday and spent much of the day diagramming the scene and taking photographs.
Just after 2 p.m. Thursday, officials said they had removed the man’s body from the ditch but didn’t know his identity.
The body was partially submerged in water. County public works employees worked Thursday draining the ditch, Hover said.
The ditch runs along Marine Drive and is next to a corn field.
The investigation is happening during a corn harvest, “so we’re being careful to make sure the farmers can do their work and we can do ours,” Hover said.
A stretch of Marine Drive from 258th St. NW to 267th St. NW was closed for several hours Thursday to protect detectives and workers.
