ARLINGTON — Divers today recovered the body of an Everett teenager who drowned in the Stillaguamish River.
The 19-year-old man’s body was located Tuesday about 35 yards from where he was swimming with friends Monday near the Blue Stilly Park.
The water in that area of the river is about 12 feet deep, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.
Witnesses saw the man struggling in the water Monday evening. A friend attempted to pull him to safety. The river’s current impeded his efforts.
Rescue crews were summoned to the river around 6:30 p.m. and began combing the water. The search was called off Monday night and resumed again Tuesday morning.
The man was not wearing a life jacket, Hover said.
His identity has not been released pending an investigation by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The man’s death is the second so far this year along that stretch of the Stillaguamish.
In July, Ann Marie McKinnon, 31, of Seattle, drowned after becoming tangled in river debris while floating near Blue Stilly Park.
A week ago, the body of a boater was recovered from a small lake on the Tulalip Indian Reservation. He had been in an aluminum boat on the lake and ended up in the water. His body was found about 20 yards from the dock.
