INDEX — A Mountlake Terrace man died Monday while hiking near Index, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
The man, 49, and a family member were about 3½ miles from the trailhead on the popular Lake Serene trail — well past the fork to Bridal Veil Falls — when he fell around 2 p.m.
It’s not clear how far he fell, sheriff’s office spokesperson Courtney O’Keefe said in an email.
“From what I have heard it doesn’t sound like it was a fall off a ridge,” she said.
Other hikers began to perform CPR. First responders eventually took over but were unable to revive the man.
“At this time, it is unknown if the death is related to a medical incident,” according to the sheriff’s office.
The man’s body was transported by the sheriff’s office helicopter SnoHawk10 to Taylor’s Landing near Snohomish.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office will confirm the man’s identity and determine the cause of death.
