EVERETT – A 10-year-old boy buried in a backyard sandbox Saturday died this afternoon at a Seattle hospital.
Codey Porter’s death was announced in a statement released late this afternoon by his family:
“We are sad to inform you that Codey Porter passed away today at approximately 3:35 p.m. He passed peacefully, with his family at his side. We appreciate all the support and prayers that we have received. We have decided to honor Codey’s memory by making him an organ donor, and a miracle for another family.”
Codey apparently was with friends Saturday when play turned dangerous.
As part of a game, the boy reportedly was buried in the sandbox. When his friends realized Codey wasn’t breathing, they called for adults and the boy was rushed to the hospital, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.
He was in critical condition at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center this morning, hospital spokeswoman Louise Maxwell said.
Extra counselors were at Silver Firs Elementary School in Everett today where Codey is a student.
