It’s a nail-biter for the next president of the United States.
Sen. John Kerry pulled close in late returns, narrowing President Bush’s Electoral lead 249-242.
With 88 percent of the precincts reporting nationwide, both candidates were close to the 270 Electoral votes it takes to win the presidency.
The Associated Press reported that Bush was leading the popular vote – 53,459,293, or 51 percent, to 49,816,958, or 48 percent.
Bush has won 27 states. Kerry has won 16 states and the District of Columbia.
Bush leads in four other states with a total Electoral vote of 37. Kerry leads in three other states with an Electoral vote of 31.
