An analysis by The Herald found that cable barriers installed in the I-5 median along 10 miles of freeway near Marysville failed to stop cars from crossing the median 20 percent of the time between mileposts 205 and 208 from 1999 to 2004.
Three high-profile crossover accidents over the past year on that 10 miles of freeway led the state Department of Transportation to launch a study on whether the barriers are safe and what, if any, changes need to be made.
The state expects to release its report by the end of this month.
