CAMANO ISLAND — A race on Camano Island this weekend honors a Stanwood woman who lost her life to domestic violence.
The eighth annual Camano View Dash is planned for 9 a.m. Saturday at Utsalady Elementary School, 608 N. Arrowhead Road.
The race raises money for scholarships for cross-country athletes at Stanwood High School. Some funds also go toward equipment for the school’s cross-country and track and field teams.
A Stanwood cross-country alumna, Dayna Fure, was shot to death by her ex-boyfriend in 2004. Her story is shared in domestic-violence prevention campaigns around the country.
A family friend, Amy Anderson, took over organizing the race a few years back. Anderson used to babysit Dayna and her sister, she said.
“It’s the least that I can do,” she said. “It is such a good cause and there is such a good message and to be able to keep that gift of Dayna alive and to do something positive for our community is well worth it.”
Close to 200 people came out last year, Anderson said.
The race is broken into two pieces. In the 5k, people can walk or run. Children, strollers and dogs are welcome.
The 10k is a more challenging, run-only course with some uphill stretches.
Last year, a photo collage of Fure was on display, and people shared memories and stories of her life, Anderson said.
Over time, Anderson hopes the race will grow to include more information about the dangers of domestic violence.
“It’s a relatively small hometown race, but it’s got huge potential, and a lot of people are just passionate about it and are always there,” she said.
Registration is open through race day. The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for people 17 and under.
