Camano Island will display a piece of Olympic history

Everyone wants a piece of the Olympic Games.

On Camano Island, they actually have a piece and they are willing to display it.

An Olympic flag will be flown on Camano during the run of the games, which kick off today. The flag features the five interlocking rings that symbolize the logo for the games.

A ceremonial flag raising is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Camano Island Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information Center in Gateway Park at Terry’s Corner, 578 N. Camano Drive.

They plan to raise the original Olympic flag that flew during the grand opening at Gateway Park and the Chamber Visitor Information Center.

The flag was originally given to the late Jack Sharpe and his wife, Lois Sharpe, longtime Camano Island Chamber members, by the mother of Sarah Jones, a Stanwood High School graduate who was on the Olympic rowing team in 2000.

The Arts, Hearts and Hammers fundraiser on Whidbey Island was a big success.

“We had over 40 artists donate work, and almost all of the work sold,” said Sandy Whiting with Open Door Gallery in Langley. “As usual with a silent auction, it got pretty exciting at the end.”

Some of the Whidbey artists who featured their work were Pete Jordan, Inge Roberts, Meredith MacLeod, David Price, Michel Tsouris, Mark Fessler, Bruce Launer, Kim Kelzer, Sue Taves and Rob Hetler.

“These artists commanded a high price for their work,” Whiting said. “Well over 150 people attended.”

Swede Hill Cellars and Blooms Winery donated wine.

Chocolates and strawberries were a big hit.

Hearts and Hammers brings together hundreds of volunteers for a Saturday in May to help repair and rehabilitate homes of those who are physically or financially unable to do the work alone. Materials and labor are donated.

Proceeds from the auction are shared by Hearts and Hammers, the artists, and the gallery.

Camano Island Library Friends need bunches of fake grapes.

Because of the crummy economy, the fate of the Camano Island Library is up in the air. Friends are planning an auction March 20 to raise money to keep the library operating at 848 N. Sunrise Blvd.

Auction chairwoman Connie Hall says no matter where you live, losing a library hurts everyone.

The Friends need donations for the auction, sponsors, wine, beer and decorations including artificial grapes and vines.

For more information, call 360-629-2585.

To those who donate, thanks bunches.

Ouch.
