BIRTHDAY

Joseph Siegert

Joseph Siegert will celebrate his 101st birthday with a party at noon Saturday at Merrill Gardens Retirement Community in Stanwood. His family and close friends will be attending.

Joe was born Jan. 26, 1907, on a farm in Minnesota.

His father died when Joe was 11 years old. The young boy quit school to run the farm. He worked hard for the next 65 years.

After leaving the farm, Joe moved to Detroit, Mich. He became a barber, owned a wrecking yard, ran a still during Prohibition, owned restaurants and bought the first ice cream-making machine in Minnesota.

Joe owned a shooting gallery, and when he moved his family to the Seattle area he had two variety stores and a tavern in Monroe. He became a millwright and shareholder in the Anacortes and Everett plywood mills. During the Depression, Joe’s interest in building homes was inspired by friends who showed him plans from a Sears catalog. He began building in Anacortes and was a full-time contractor, eventually building homes in and around Marysville.

Joe has one son, Chuck Siegert, and a daughter, Judy Adamson, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Joe attributes his long life to being a workaholic who loved dancing, gambling, hunting and fishing with friends. He is a member of the Eagles and still enjoys walking and exercising every day.
