Drag racer

reunion set

Organizers of a reunion of drivers of the drag strip that ran at the Arlington Airport during the 1960s have chosen Sept. 11 as the date for the event.

An unused runway at the airport was used as a major stop on the National Hot Rod Association circuit for several years until 1968.

The reunion will be a chance to relive memories, although no racing is planned. Organizers chose Sept. 11 after conferring with airport officials to make sure the schedule was open.

The Everett City Council on Wednesday night appointed Tom Gaffney to replace former Mayor Ed Hansen on the Everett Public Facilities District board.

The district runs the Everett Events Center.

Gaffney, whose term ends in 2007, is a partner in the Everett office of the accounting firm Moss Adams. He is a trustee of Everett Community College, EverTrust Bank and Providence Everett Medical Center, and a board member of the EverTrust Foundation.

Mayor Ray Stephanson nominated Gaffney after the council last month rejected the mayor’s proposal to extend Hansen’s term on the board.

In rejecting Hansen, council members cited the former mayor’s 54 percent attendance record at district board meetings last year and his involvement in the November mayoral race.
