New trustee joins EvCC board

Gov. Chris Gregoire recently appointed Everett businesswoman Gigi Burke to Everett Community College’s Board of Trustees.

Burke has more than 20 years of business leadership experience, including working as an owner and vice president of Crown Distributing from 1989 to 2007.

She has also served as a Washington State Regional Transportation Commissioner, and was a member of the Washington Beer and Wine Wholesaler’s Association, Snohomish County Executive Advisory Board, city of Everett Charter Review Committee, and Mountain Pacific Bank Board of Trustees.

Burke is a member of the Boys &Girls Club of Snohomish County Board of Trustees, Greater Everett Community Foundation Board, Providence Regional Medical Center General Children’s Association Guild, and the South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary. She previously served as the Everett Public Schools Foundation president and was a member of the YMCA Board of Trustees.

Burke’s term is from 2010 through 2014. She replaces trustee Nancy Truitt Pierce, who completed her third term in 2009 after serving on the board since 1998.

Furiiak is Everett Sertoman of Year

The Everett Sertoma Club recently named Al Furiiak as the Sertoman of the Year for 2009.

Furiiak is currently the recording secretary for the Sertoma Club and has been the chairman of the Larry Carlson Memorial Golf Tournament for the past two years.

Furiiak is a member of the Everett Knights of Columbus, Blue and Gold of Everett High School and is a volunteer at the Read to Children of Everett School District. He is also an active member of the Snohomish County Football Officials Association and the Snohomish County Association.

He is a 1959 graduate of Everett High School. He worked for Safeway for 30 years and the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Marysville before retiring in 1998.

Local boys medal at karate tournament

Six students from the Pacific Karate Organization in Everett earned medals at the Washington State Karate Federation 2010 Invitational Tournament on Jan. 30 at Edmonds Community College.

Nick Claymore, 13, of Lake Stevens; Austin Temple, 14, of Everett; and Mack Temple, 13, of Everett combined to win gold medals in Team Kata. They competed in the age 14 to 17 division.

Other PKO students also earned medals at the event. Jack Gee, 34, of Snohomish earned silver in kata and bronze in kumite in the men age 18 to 34 division. Ryan Sanchez, 6, of Everett won silver in kata, boys 6 and under division, and Chas Schilling, 14, of Edmonds won gold in kata, boys age 13 to 14 division.

Kata is a routine or choreographed pattern of movements. When practiced as a team, the routine is synchronized and all team members must have perfect form. Kumite is sparring against an opponent.

Harley-Davidson dealer earns award from Marysville Kiwanis

Marysville Kiwanis Club members presented an Appreciation Award on Feb. 5 to owner Scott Smernis and the staff of Sound Harley-Davidson of Marysville in recognition of the company’s support of community events and activities.

Sound H-D has supported and contributed to a variety of charity fundraisers and community events including the Oyster Run Pancake Breakfast, raising thousands of dollars for college scholarships for local high school students through Marysville Kiwanis and the Soroptimists Club of Marysville.

Sound H-D has also helped with Kiwanis and city-hosted events including Special Olympics, Fisher House, Olive Crest, the Marysville Popcorn in the Parks Movies Series and National Night Out Against Crime. In addition to the Appreciation Award, Kiwanis’ Everyday Heroes Award for the month of February was presented to Kari Korsgren, Sound H-D marketing and events manager.

Kids design Junior Firefighter stickers

North County Fire and EMS recently announced this year’s Junior Firefighter sticker contest winners.

This year’s 2010 winners are Isabella Headrick, 7, a second-grader at Cedarhome Elementary School in Stanwood; Dylan Schwartzmiller, 5, a kindergartner at Cedarhome Elementary School in Stanwood; and Mieko Schwartzmiller, 8, a third-grader at Cedarhome Elementary School in Stanwood.

Mieko is the fire department’s grand prize winner. Her colored sticker will be made into this year’s Junior Firefighter stickers that the department’s Public Education Division will hand out at this year’s public events.

GIVING

Athletes give back

The Catholic Youth Organization from the parishes of Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, recently finished their basketball seasons. Several teams chose to donate money to charities instead of receiving end-of-season trophies.

More than $850 was donated to: Haitian relief funds; Everett Gospel Mission for Women and Children; and Nothing But Nets, the United Nations malaria prevention campaign.
