Lions raise money for Edmonds Food BankPeggy Kennedy, director of the Edmonds Food Bank, recently joined the Edmonds Lions Club for dinner and received a check for $4,840 that the club members raised by selling raffle tickets for products and services at local markets, restaurants and specialty shops.

Kennedy has worked with the Edmonds Food Bank for 32 years at the Methodist Church in Edmonds. The food bank this year served 538 families for Thanksgiving and 477 for Christmas. Most volunteers are between 70 and 90 years old, and teenagers are beginning to take an interest in the service.

The food bank also operates a Christmas Toy Shop for children, from infants to teens, and provided about 1,000 kids last year with books and toys.

Scout ambassadors collect foodThree members of Ambassador Girl Scout Troop 42093 (SU 245, Edmonds) held a 90-minute food drive blitz outside the Mountlake Terrace Albertson’s on Jan. 17. The group holds regular food drives, alternating between Edmonds QFC and the Albertson’s stores. The troop includes Laura Jagnow, Adriana Brenner, Anna Matteucci and leaders Jennie Duncan and Kelly Matteucci. Laura and Adriana are German exchange students.

Fire officials train in MarylandLocal fire department leaders recently completed two weeks of university-level advanced education at the National Fire Academy in Maryland.

Attendees included Everett Fire Chief Murray Gordon, Everett Fire Inspector Steve Goforth, Lake Stevens Fire Marshal Robert Marshall, Lynnwood firefighter paramedics Dan Grantier and Phil Pons, and Fire District 7 Deputy Chief Scott Dorsey.

They studied hazardous materials chemistry, emergency medical services quality-management and conducting research. The class and travel expenses are paid for by the federal government.

Rotary volunteer honored by MarysvilleLongtime local business owner Mike Leighan was honored Jan. 27 as the December Volunteer of the Month at a Marysville City Council meeting. Leighan is a former city councilman.

Much of Leighan’s community involvement comes through his years of service with the Marysville Noon Rotary Club, including his role as conductor of the Merrysville Express Rotary Train at the annual Holiday Tour of Lights.

Leighan also was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

Daughters of Norway installs officersDaughters of Norway Thelma Lodge 26 installed its new board of officers, including President Diane Guildner, on Jan. 18.

Thelma Lodge meets at 10 a.m. the third Saturday of each month at Normanna Lodge Sons of Norway, 2725 Oakes Ave., Everett. Daughters of Norway is open to any woman at least 13 years old and of Scandinavian descent or married to someone of Scandinavian descent or with a relative married to a person of Norwegian birth or descent. The club focuses on programs on Scandinavian culture and history.
