Community Transit, Snohomish County’s primary public transportation provider, plans to purchase 23 British-style double-decker buses for its daily commuter runs to Seattle.
The agency’s ridership is increasing, agency CEO Joyce Eleanor said.
“People are exploring their commute options, and we’re doing our best to make transit attractive,” she said.
The buses are expected to begin service in 2010. Last August, Community Transit became the second transit agency in the nation to put a modern double decker bus into regular service. The agency named its bus “Double Tall,” in reference to the Northwest’s reputation for coffee drinking.
The bus has performed well, leading to the decision to buy more of them, Eleanor said.
The new buses will replace several 60-foot-long articulated buses nearing the end of their service life. Double-decker buses carry more passengers while taking up less road space, Eleanor said.
Earlier this month, Eleanor and several Community Transit board members traveled to Washington, D.C. to ask the state’s federal delegation for $8 million to fund the double decker purchase.
Community Transit also announced that its ridership climbed 10 percent in 2007, to a record 10.9 million riders.
