EVERETT — Getting a concealed pistol license just got a lot easier in Snohomish County.
The license itself is changing and so is the process of obtaining one.
Gone, as of Saturday, will be the old paper version. It’s being replaced by a plastic card similar to a driver’s license.
At the same time, the county is one of the first in the state to allow people to apply online for a new concealed pistol license or to renew an old one from home or by cellphone.
That option started earlier this week. It’s proven popular.
From 5 p.m. Tuesday to 9 a.m. Wednesday, the sheriff’s office received 50 online applications.
“That’s 50 people who didn’t have to make the trek to the courthouse, pay to park and wait in the lobby,” said Shari Ireton, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
Until this week, applications could only be handled in person at the courthouse in Everett or at sheriff’s office precincts. The wait time could take up to 45 minutes.
Now, they’re able to pay online by debit or credit card, although they can still pay by cash or check at the courthouse. Online applicants get an email, text message or phone call when their license is available after a background check is done.
Applicants still will need to stop by to verify their identification and have their fingerprints taken. They’ll be able to do so by appointment instead of waiting.
“We still need to make sure you are who you say you are,” Ireton said.
By having the application filled out in advance online, they’ll save time.
The cards will be mailed within 30 days.
Roughly 69,000 county residents have a concealed pistol permit. That works out to about one out of 12 residents, according to state records. The total includes about 51,000 men and 17,000 women.
Statewide, about 627,500 people have a concealed pistol permit.
