Two dogs that attacked and killed one llama and injured two others were destroyed Thursday, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said.
The German shepherd and bull mastiff broke into a fenced pasture Sunday morning and attacked three of seven llamas at the farm in the Lakewood area near Lake Goodwin.
Animal control officers later captured the animals several miles away, she said.
The dogs’ owner came forward, identified the dogs and talked to sheriff’s officials. He’s taking full responsibility and wants to work with the llamas’ owners regarding restitution, Jorgensen said.
"He was very cooperative, and he signed a statement of surrender, which means forfeiting the dogs," she said. "He said the dogs had been confined and had gotten out on Saturday and he couldn’t find them. The man felt very badly about what happened. He came forward on his own."
Jorgensen also said the dog owner was pleased the dogs were located quickly so the situation could be resolved.
The dogs’ owner, whose name the sheriff’s office refused to release, was charged with three misdemeanors: having a vicious dog, violation of the county’s leash law, and having a nuisance animal, Jorgensen said.
She’s unaware of any other complaints against the man’s dogs.
Because they’re considered vicious dogs, the two animals were not adoptable.
