SNOHOMISH — Community Transit has opened four new highly requested bus stops with service to Snohomish and Glacier Peak high schools. The stops are on Cathcart Way and Puget Park Drive.
The stops are expected to have a sizable effect on students in the area.
Students are responsible for their own transportation to sports practices, band concerts and other opportunities at either high school. The 10-minute bus ride makes it easier for students to go in between.
Residents have requested stops for more than two years since Route 109 service began in 2016. Previously, there was a three-mile stretch where the bus passed with no stops, leaving local students and residents without accessible public transport.
Community Transit requested the stops two years ago from Snohomish County when the route opened, but was denied because of curves and a 45 mph speed limit along the road that could cause potential blind spots and traffic hazards.
The new stops are safely off-road in bus pullouts.
“We intended to have stops from the beginning … but we can’t just put stops wherever we want them,” said Martin Munguia, a Community Transit spokesman. “We have to request them from the jurisdictions.”
The route’s new stops are expected to relieve some congestion, particularly on busy Cathcart Way.
The buses run to and from the Ash Way Park-and-Ride in north Lynnwood and the Lake Stevens Transit Center. They travel along Highway 9 and into downtown Snohomish.
An additional pair of new bus stops is being added about a mile west on Cathcart Way and Snohomish-Cascade Drive.
