Several local schools sent teams to the DECA International Career Development Conference, held April 25-30 in Anaheim, Calif. The business and marketing club offers competition opportunities in a variety of categories, such as accounting, a stock market game and business ethics.
This marked the 11th year that Mariner High School received a Gold Award for its student store. This year’s team, Shayla Forbes-Luong, Alex Angelos and Melissa Suwuh, finished in the top 10 nationally for food service enterprises.
Other local students who were among the national winners: Danielle Aldrich, Jackson High School (international business plan), Mengwei Chen, Kamiak, and Edward Radion, Arlington (both in financial consulting), and Jacob Lucas and Daniel Damitio, Archbishop Murphy (marketing management team decision making).
Other local schools that fielded teams included Monroe High School, which sent its largest group in over a decade with 10 students qualifying for competition.
