EVERTT – Snohomish County Council Democrats are taking control of two key subcommittees, one that oversees law enforcement and courts, the other controlling planning and development.
Council chairman Kirke Sievers announced the changes Friday and proposed changing the times that regular meetings are scheduled.
Each of the five councilmen will continue to serve on each of the five subcommittees, but new chairmen were named Friday.
Councilman Dave Gossett was named chairman of the Law, Justice and Human Services Committee, which oversees law enforcement and court policies affecting more than 70 percent of the general fund spending.
Newly elected Councilman Dave Somers was named chairman of the Planning and Community Development Committee, which debates housing, environmental and building code policies.
Sievers will remain chairman of the Finance and Economic Development Committee, which oversees budgets and spending.
Republican Councilman John Koster will become chairman of the Operations and Performance Audits Committee.
Republican Councilman Gary Nelson will retain chairmanship of the Public Works and Transportation Committee.
Sievers has proposed the council’s Monday morning meetings shift to 1 p.m., and committee meetings shift to other days and times beginning Jan. 17.
