BOTHELL — A Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man early today when called to a Bothell apartment complex after someone was stabbed in the face.
The gunfire broke out after the deputy confronted the man who allegedly stabbed the victim, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.
“Shots were fired by the deputy, striking the suspect. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by aid,” Goetz said in a prepared statement.
Police initially released few details on the shooting. About 3 p.m., Goetz said detectives were willing to say that a screwdriver had been found next to the body of the man shot by the deputy. A second screwdriver was recovered near the apartment.
The incident unfolded just after 1:15 a.m. at the Archstone Apartments, located in the 20200 block of Bothell-Everett Highway.
The first deputy on the scene encountered three men outside building 14. Inside the apartment was a pregnant woman.
The woman’s father reportedly had been stabbed in the face with a screwdriver by her boyfriend. Both of the men were outside, as was another male witness.
The male witness told detectives he “felt threatened by the suspect and that his life was in danger, ” Goetz said.
Detectives released no details about the confrontation that led to the boyfriend’s shooting.
Chris Sikel, 27, heard what he thought were fireworks early this morning.
“What I heard was four or five pops. That’s when Martini, my dog, ran into the closest because she’s scared of fireworks,” Sikel said. Martini is a pit bull.
Investigators have cordoned off the parking lot in front of the three-story building in the large apartment complex.
The woman and her father were taken to an area hospital by aid car. The father was being treated for a puncture wound to the face, an injury that is not believed to be life threatening. The woman was transported as a precaution.
The deputy was not injured. He is in his mid-30s and has been with the sheriff’s office for more than two years.
He was placed on administrative leave, as is standard practice in police involved shootings.
The shooting is being investigated by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team. The special group of homicide detectives attempt to independently investigate every time police use deadly force in the county. Goetz is part of that team.
The death marked the sixth time this year that police from Snohomish County have fatally shot a suspect.
