EVERETT — Procrastinators beware: If your driver’s license or car tabs are set to expire, this isn’t the month to put off a renewal.
The state Department of Licensing plans to shut down its offices on Aug. 31 to transition to a modern driver licensing system. From the Friday before Labor Day weekend through the following Monday’s holiday, there will be no way to renew licenses or state ID cards — online or in person.
The shutdown affects business licenses as well as tabs for trailers and boats.
“It’s a huge impact to the community because people wait until the last minute to get their car tabs,” said Snohomish County Auditor Carolyn Weikel, whose office partners with the state on licensing services. “There will be no place for you to buy your car tabs on Aug. 31, Sept. 1, Sept. 2 or Sept. 3.”
Online renewals could pause even earlier, on Aug. 26. All services are due to resume on Sept. 4, the Tuesday after the holiday.
“Basically, we’re implementing a new driver’s licensing system,” said Christine Anthony, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Licensing. “This is a project we’ve been working on for a number of years.”
The upgrade won’t result in any major changes to the department’s website, Anthony said.
The upcoming $34.8 million rollout is the second of three major upgrades for state licensing databases, she said. The first occurred in December 2016.
