RICHLAND — Dozens of carp and goldfish died in an irrigation pond in Richland.
The Kennewick Irrigation District said it didn’t expect fish to be in the pond and they may have been killed by the routine application of herbicide to remove aquatic plants that can clog the system. Or the fish may have been killed by a warm-weather algae bloom.
The Tri-City Herald reported the fish were found over the weekend by a man who took his granddaughter to the pond at Richland’s Badger Mountain Village to feed the fish.
Irrigation district manager Chuck Freeman said the irrigation pond is not supposed to have fish, and it has received several treatments with weed killer.
