LYNNWOOD – Musical chairs in the Edmonds School District could mean a big change for neighbors near Scriber Lake High School.
The alternative high school, which has more than 200 students enrolled, will be moved into the school district headquarters at 20420 68th Ave. W. in two to three years.
In turn, district offices and operations will be relocated to the Scriber Lake school site, 20525 52nd Ave. W., which will be expanded by 11 acres.
The plan is to bring scattered administration, warehouse, maintenance and transportation operations into one big building.
For residents in the Cedar Valley neighborhood, that means a bigger school district presence, with 400 to 500 employees and 140 buses.
The district has scheduled a meeting with neighbors at 7 tonight in the high school gym to present building plans.
Ed Peters, the district’s capital projects director, said the planning team wants to hear neighborhood worries, such as concerns about traffic.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if we find out that’s what people are most concerned about,” he said.
The bus route will be from the back side of the property and shouldn’t pose much of an impact because of staggered departure times, he said. The district also is willing to install a $500,000 traffic signal at the intersection of 204th Street SW and 52nd Avenue W.
The moves are not directly part of the $140 million bond measure voters passed in February. Rather, they will be paid for through land sales and leases of district property.
Scriber’s move to the district office is expected to cost about $12 million.
There is no cost estimate yet for the district headquarters’ move to the existing Scriber campus, which is the former Cedar Valley Elementary School.
The district has assembled 19 acres. Scriber will be demolished to make way for the new building.
In its new location, Scriber Lake High School will be expanded to include an alternative school for middle school students, starting with seventh graders.
