EDMONDS – When people in Edmonds go on vacation, the police department enlists the help of volunteers to check on the security of empty houses.
The department is looking for additional volunteers for its vacation house check program. Volunteers are needed for Friday and Saturday mornings.
Volunteers go in pairs to make sure no one has broken into the houses. They report suspicious activity to police, crime prevention officer Robin Heslop said.
“It’s not a huge time commitment, and we provide training,” she said.
Volunteers are given training in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. They also are instructed in how to use a police radio to communicate with officers.
“A lot of people in our community use this program, and we rely a lot on our volunteers,” Heslop said.
Volunteers must meet the following requirements:
* Be able to work Friday or Saturday mornings.
* Have a valid Washington driver’s license, valid auto insurance and an infraction-free driving record.
* Undergo an interview and full background check.
* Be dependable, alert, friendly and interested in serving the community.
* Be physically fit and able to walk distances on uneven terrain and in wet conditions.
* Familiarity and knowledge of Edmonds’ street addresses is beneficial, but not required.
