MUKILTEO — An Everett man has been accused of extorting a woman by threatening to share a sex tape allegedly filmed without her knowledge.
Earlier this month he sent the woman a message at 3:45 a.m. on Instagram, according to a probable cause affidavit. He reportedly told her he had videotaped them having sex three years ago, according to court papers. He asked her for nude photos in exchange for keeping the video private.
He said he would show her boyfriend the recording, police said.
The man, 25, was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on Friday for investigation for cyberstalking and extortion, a felony.
He briefly dated the woman three years ago, according to court records. She was 17 at the time. Since then, the woman has tried to avoid him. He reportedly sent her unsolicited messages and explicit photos over the years.
She deleted social media accounts and changed her phone number, police said. When the man couldn’t reach her by the phone or online, he reportedly showed up at her house and work.
Police spoke to the manager of an apartment complex where the man used to live. More than one woman there had previously told management the man seemed to be stalking them, according to court papers.
“We had a lot of problems,” the manager told an officer.
Everett District Court Judge Anthony Howard granted permission for the man to be released Monday. Howard said the man’s alleged behavior did not indicate he was likely to commit a violent crime, but was “deplorable in a multitude of ways.”
Howard ordered the man to stay off the internet.
Cyberstalking is a gross misdemeanor under a state law that was passed in 2004.
