Everett motel standoff ends after 14 hours, child unharmed

Police arrested the man, 48, for investigation of assault, unlawful imprisonment and unlawful firearm possession.

Everett

EVERETT — After an almost 14-hour standoff Wednesday, deputies arrested an armed man accused of barricading himself inside his Everett motel room with a child.

Deputies arrested the Everett man, 48, outside his room at the Motel 6 at 224 128th Street SW on Wednesday night. The child was unharmed, according to a new police report.

The suspect was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of second-degree assault, unlawful imprisonment, possession of a stolen firearm and second-degree unlawful firearm possession.

Around 7 a.m. Wednesday, the man arrived at the motel where he’d been temporarily living with his girlfriend and their three children, according to the report.

The man had been gone for two days, according to court documents. He reportedly became hostile because he believed his girlfriend had stolen some of his jewelry and cheated on him. The girlfriend went to another room to stay with a friend.

The suspect tried to enter the friend’s room, banging on the door and yelling, deputies wrote. When he wasn’t allowed in, he took out a handgun and racked the chamber, pointing it in the air.

He eventually entered, reportedly blocking the entrance with a cart. He pistol-whipped his girlfriend on the head, according to the report. He reportedly told her, “you’re going to make us all die,” while pointing the gun at himself and his girlfriend, according to the report.

The man allowed his girlfriend and two of the children to leave, but insisted his son, 3, stay with him, the report said. She tried to convince him to give her the gun and their son, but he refused. The woman left with two of her children and called 911.

The man has bipolar disorder and had used methamphetamine, according to the police report.

The suspect reportedly said he wanted to “commit suicide by cop,” according to the report.

Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies and a SWAT team responded to the motel. At 11:21 p.m., the man surrendered to the SWAT team, walking outside his motel room holding the child in one arm, with the other arm raised, detectives wrote.

After obtaining a search warrant, police found a Glock 43X hidden behind the toilet. It had five rounds in the magazine, according to the report.

On Thursday, Everett District Court Judge Tam Bui found probable cause for all counts and set bail at $250,000.
