Everett police Capt. Greg Lineberry recently was featured in PoliceOne, an online community for law enforcement.
Lineberry talked about how children with autism present a unique challenge to police officers in the field. He told PoliceOne that he used to
assume bad parenting was behind bad behavior, but he’s since learned that it’s a complex and challenging topic.
“Officers should maintain an awareness that when such children and young adults are exhibiting such behavior — and there is a medical condition behind it — the individual’s behavior cannot be self-controlled and may be highly unpredictable,” he told the site.
Lineberry also spoke about an innovative partnership involving Everett police and prosecutors who seek a judge’s help in swiftly finding humane responses in situations where somebody with mental health issues is facing arrest.
