EVERETT — It’s time for people 50 and older to start brushing off their dictionaries.
The Carl Gipson Senior Center of Everett is offering its second annual spelling bee at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the center, 3025 Lombard Ave.
The inaugural event last year turned out to be a success, said Director Deb Loughrey-Johnson.
The center decided to try organizing an adult bee after someone slipped the idea for the bee into the center’s suggestion box.
Last year’s winner, Loretta Troupe, then 89, won with the word “Stehekin,” an isolated town in Washington’s Cascade Range.
This year’s theme is food and other words surrounding the preparation of food.
This isn’t the Scripps National Spelling. Spellers are allowed to misspell three words and it’s OK to first write the words down before spelling them aloud.
The center is encouraging people who want to participate to sign up in advance by calling 425-257-8780. It’s OK to show up and watch.
It doesn’t cost anything to enter but participants must be senior center members. It’s free to sign up for a membership.
